Pets and Grief
In many households the pet dog or
cat is no longer considered a pet, but a family member. It is no surprise that “Fido” has been
elevated to the status of one of the family as a couple’s children grow up and
move away, or as individuals living alone seek a constant companion. The bond between our four legged friends and
us often becomes a strong one.
That is why it also comes as no
surprise to many of us that the death of one of our furry family members can be
very traumatic for a “Pet Parent.”
Although some in our society may downplay the emotions that one
experiences upon the death of our family dog or cat, it has been demonstrated
that many people experience the same emotions of grief that they may feel from
the loss of a human friend or family member.
To help those individuals who may
have difficulty coping with the emotions following the loss of a pet, we offer
help through our Aftercare program at Pray Funeral Home. One of our affiliates, Paws and Remember, has resources and
links to articles, information and books that may be helpful. If the emotional need for help is great, our
Grief Counselor here at Pray funeral Home and other helpful individuals may be able to help.
