Green, or natural burial is a way of caring for the dead with minimal environmental impact that aids in the conservation of natural resources, reduction of carbon emissions, protection of worker health, and the restoration and/or preservation of habitat. Green burial necessitates the use of non-toxic and biodegradable materials, such as caskets, shrouds, and urns made from natural materials.
Green Burial
Pray Funeral Home has several options for Green Burial using casket's and shrouds made of biodegradable materials. Caskets may be made of unfinished wood such as poplar or pine, or woven materials such as bamboo and willow. Shrouds may be made of natural cotton, wool, or silk material. Some shrouds incorporate straps, or handle extensions to assist with lowering the deceased into the grave.
Green Burial Cemeteries
Green Burial Cemeteries are often set in undeveloped areas of designated woods or prairie areas. Some require adherence to strict green burial practices, while others follow hybrid practices such as utilizing machinery to open the graves. Currently there are only three certified green burial cemeteries in Michigan that we know of.
Clean Cremation Services
Pray Funeral Home, Inc. makes available several “Clean Cremation” options. Clean Cremation uses caskets and shrouds that are made of naturally combustible materials. These do not release possibly harmful chemicals from finishes, or metallic materials into the atmosphere during cremation. Clean Cremation units also do not introduce metal screws or staples in to the cremated remains that need to be separated from the cremated remains following the cremation process.
